This movie besides starring the horse, Hidalgo, stars Viggo Mortensen as Frank T. Hopkins, the greatest rider the West had ever known in l890.  You will remember him in Lord of the Rings and I remember him as Gwenith Paltrow's lover in Perfect Murder with Michael Douglas.  This is based on a true story of the greatest long-distance horse race ever run which was held yearly for centuries as the Ocean of Fire, a 3,000 mile survival race across the Arabian Desert.  Hopkins was a dispatch rider for the US Calvary and had witnessed attrocities against the Indians at this time that made him try to forget by drinking and joining Buffalo Bill's western show.  His drinking almost lost  this acting job there until his fellow employees, which included Annie Oakley, helped stake him as a participant in this Arabian Desert race.  The Shiek, (Omar Shariff) and his daughter come into play as they want to see this American cowboy and his mustant, Hidalgo, go against the world's greatest Arabian horses and Bedouin riders.  Hopkins and his horse have many life-threatening situations during this race and I don't want to tell you the ending, but just to say that it is exciting.  I would encourage movie goers to put this on your list as a 'must see' when it comes out in March.  It is rated PG-13 for violence but there is no sex, drugs or bad language.
